We seem to be in a world where everyone wants results yesterday. Time and time again people want quick fixes. Quick fixes like putting a bandage around a ripped finger: yeah youll help the issue for a while but youre not dealing with the problem. That is the same as going on a drastic calorie reduction. Yeah youll lose weight in the first week but thats because youre eating next to nothing. Of course that will happen! Dieters have been made to think that quick fixes and unrealistic transformations are achievable. Get massive in 4 weeks? More like 4 months. Minimum. Even then weight is not a determining factor for success. Yes tracking weight can be a useful measurement at the start but the further you go into a deficit you need to look at other measurements. Measurements such as; body fat percentage hip to waist ratio and the old fashioned method which is largely forgotten these days – the mirror! In addition take progress pictures! You see yourself in the mirror everyday and I bet when you look in it all you look at are the bits of yourself you dont like and because its day to day youre not going to see a change. Change happens over weeks and months! To make significant changes and get a learner physique you want to reduce body fat and build muscle. Not just get skinny. Severe calories reductions will not work because they lead to a loss in lean body MASS not body FAT. One of the best ways is to create a small caloric deficit (usually 10-25%) with a focus on increasing your protein intake (2.3-2.5g/kg) (Helms et al. 2014).
